Hello!

My name is Taylor Sloan (all pronouns). I live and have grown up in Treaty 6 Territory. I live, work and study the area traditionally known by Cree speakers asamiskwacîwâskahikan, by the Nakota Sioux as ti oda  and by the Niitsitapi as amakowsis or omahkoyis. My community is also know by the settler name Edmonton, Alberta. I am a descendent of settlers and my family (both biological and chosen) live across the lands of Treaty 6, Treaty 8 and the Peace and Friendship Treaties.

I am currently a student in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program at Athabasca University.

I completed my Bachelor of Arts in 2022 from MacEwan University. I graduated with a double major in Sociology and History, after having bounced around various majors in the humanities and social sciences over the 6 year course of my undergraduate studies (It was planned to be 5 years with work and travel but Covid changed that 😅). Sociology was an early love for the lens it gave me to interrogate the competing forces of contingency and agency that shape society. The history of half of my degree was driven in equal parts by interest in the forces that have gotten us here, and the conviction that meaningful (and responsible) sociological work can not be done.

Towards the end of my degree and after graduating I worked first as a tutor focusing on junior high and high school Math, Science and Social Studies. Since 2023 I have worked for a not-for-profit in the human services and community sector.

Currently my job title is advocate. I chose to say it this way because I believe we are all advocates and it feels odd to declare myself as one just because it's what's in my email signature. In my professional role, I support families and individuals with intellectual disabilities in navigating systems and accessing normative and inclusive pathways in life. Over the last year much of my work has focused significantly on equitable access to inclusive education for students with intellectual disabilities. I also support families in accessing, planning and negotiating funding for supports through provincial programs such as PDD and FSCD. I have the best job in the world.
